~ Bernard Elliott, Grand Master 1776-1778 ~
Our Patriot Grand Master was the Hon. Bernard Elliott,
1740-1778, who was a member of the Second South Carolina State Congress and
Lieutenant Colonel in the Second Regiment of the Continental Line - Artillery
Division. It was his wife who made the rising crescent moon flags,
presented by her to the Regiment in suitable ceremony, and flown at the siege of
Savannah. Sergeant Jasper, in trying to re-erect the flag was killed, and
is locally much honored for the deed. Grand Master Barnard Elliott died on
October 25, 1778, in office, and in uniform, and was given a heroes funeral
procession, with all Grand and military honors, from his house to St. Phillips
churchyard in Charleston, on October 27, 1778.
